Here's the sets I'm shooting for in order of preference.
| 2005 Throwback Threads
Sadly, 2005 was to be the last hurrah for Donruss in the baseball card world. Which is a real shame because they were cranking out really nice sets. I really liked the Throwback Threads: simple, clean design, good player selection, and nice inserts. 58.7% Complete ( 176 / 300 cards) |
| 2004 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites
In 2003, Topps decided to take the idea of reprints a step further: use old player photos and old set designs to creat "new" sets. 2004 was the first year I loaded up and the 2005 set started to get out of control (it had a John Elway card ... so what that he was drafted by the Yankees?). So, this set gets the nod. 97.3% Complete ( 146 / 150 cards) |
| 2002 Upper Deck Piece of History
Normally, I'm not a big fan of horizontal cards. But, these were cool. I've even managed to get some of the short-printed stars. 1/26 - Received Miguel Tejada, Manny Ramirez, and Kirk Gibson through trade Originally 83.3% Complete ( 75 / 90 cards)
|
| 2001 Donruss Classics
This set showed what Donruss was capable of. Reminds me a bit of the Donruss Preferred set of 1997, only no annoying bronze! Really a classy set. 35.5% Complete ( 63 / 100 of the base set, 8/100 of the short-printed cards) |
| 2004 Fleer inScribed
Fleer is hit or miss. They either put out stinkers (like the Fleer Premium) or an awesome set. This one falls into the good pile. 61.1% Complete ( 52 / 85 cards) |
| 2009 Bowman
Ever since Bowman has gone to the all-black background, they have generally been pretty cool (2005 is the exception). I happened to buy a few boxes of these.
Current: 35.2% Complete ( 81 / 230 cards) |
| 2005 Studio
Great inserts, a crisp design. A set I really like.
Originally 25.0% Complete ( 75 / 300 cards)
|
| 2002 E-X
While not among my favorites in the E-X design, I really went after this set and bought tons of boxes. I cheated and bought the whole 2001 set off eBay. I'm trying this one the old-fashioned way. 65.5% Complete ( 91 / 139 cards) |
| 2002 Upper Deck MVP
The 1999 set was cool. The 2000 set was a step down, the 2001 set was forgetable. The 2003 and 2005 sets weren't much to write home about. But sandwiched between was this really sharp, snazzy 2002 set. Which is why it's here (and the other four sets from the 00s aren't!) 10/28 - Received Al Leiter via internet trade Originally 52.2% Complete ( 157 / 301 cards)
|
| 2003 Ultra
The photos were unusually sharp and the design enhances the cards. One of the best Ultra releases. 72.8% Complete ( 193 / 265 cards) |
| 2004 Bowman's Best
Every once in a while, I will go for a higher-end set. I think I even bought a box of these. Very sharp design.
Current: 57.8% Complete ( 43 / 50 of the base set , 16 / 52 autographs) |
| 2004 Throwback Threads
The other Throwback Threads set. I think I might like this one a little more, but I have more of the other set. So, this one is a little lower in the priority list.
Current 56.0% Complete ( 140 / 250 cards) |
| 2007 Topps
Notice a trend? I like black bordered cards. I like it just slightly more than the next set even though I didn't buy many (something about having a girlfriend cutting into cash for cards as well as time to devote to a hobby).
Current: 17.5% Complete ( 116 / 661 cards) |
| 2003 Topps
The last set of Topps cards that I've gone out of my way to buy several packs/boxes for the purpose of completion.
Current 86.1% Complete ( 620 / 720 cards) |
| 2004 Bowman
Definitely a cool set. Not sure which Bowman set is my favorite, but I managed to collect a lot of these. 40.6% Complete ( 134 / 330 cards) |
| 2002 Fleer Showcase
So, I'm at the baseball card shop here in Peoria and I'm flipping through the dime box, and I saw some of these. And I was like, "whoa!" 14.4% Complete ( 18 / 125 of the base cards) |
| 2002 Fleer Platinum
Fleer was the first to jump on the bandwagon of recycling old set designs. Probably a 20th anniversary idea in 2001. Well, recycling the 1987 design is fine with me! (And, I cheated: bought the complete set of 2004 Fleer Platinum on eBay). 7/16 - Bought some packs on eBay and got Craig Wilson, Kazuhiro Sasaki, and Vladimir Guerrero Originally 58.5% Complete ( 176 / 301 cards)
|
| 2002 Bowman
Another Bowman set. That I bought lots of packs of and would like to finish. 3/12 - Got a whopping 27 cards needed from large eBay lot, including Jose Reyes, Jake Peavy and Carl Crawford Originally 30.9% Complete ( 136 / 440 cards)
|
| 2001 Upper Deck Decade
Ok, so they ripped off the 1975 Topps design. And somehow managed to make the color-schemes even more obnoxious. But it's still cool.
Originally 28.3% Complete ( 51 / 180 cards) Currently 30.6% Complete ( 55 / 180 cards) |
| 2002 Topps Archive Reserve
Reprints of older cards, refractorized. Yeah, I bought a lot of them. 69.0% Complete ( 69 / 100 cards) |
| 2000 Upper Deck
Fairly simple design. But the blue works with lots of the photos. As opposed to the 2002 Topps yellow or 2001 Topps green. Ugh! 10/28 - Received Lance Johnson in internet trade Originally 41.5% Complete ( 224 / 540 cards)
|
| 2001 Topps Archive Reserve
See above. 56% Complete ( 56 / 100 cards) |
| 2009 Upper Deck Spectrum
Bought a pack at K-Mart in 2010 and was like, "hmmm, not bad!" So I bought a couple more packs. And now, the set closes out the list! 10/30 - Picked up Edinson Volquez and B.J. Upton Originally 10.8% Complete ( 13 / 120 cards)
