The Bash Brothers. I'm pretty sure everyone took to forearm smashing by the time this team dominated baseball in 1989. They should have won the Kirk Gibson-Series in 1988 and the sweep by the Reds in 1990 was embarrassing. Fortunately, Canseco and McGwire did get their World Series moment in 1989.
Walt Weiss was the third straight Rookie-of-the-Year winner for the A's. The pitching staff was impressive (Dave Stewart and Bob Welch were tops). Eckersley was dominant out of the pen. Hard to imagine a better offensive team and with an above-average pitching staff, it was no surprise they went on to win it all.
The 1989 Fleer set was notorious for the Billy Ripken error. But, as usual, the A's have the only green borders in the set and that sets them apart. I've noticed some of them, though, have red borders. Maybe a little foreshadowing that the team would be seeing Red the next year.
